SUMMARY:Knowledge and Opinion in Plato
DESCRIPTION:We will now look at Triads at a future session- apologies for t
he last minute change.\n\nToday we argue a lot about facts\, opinion and t
ruth. Plato's philosophy is based on ontology and epistemology\, i.e being
and knowledge\, and the two are linked. This allows for a scale of "knowl
edge"\, which he explores in the dialogues Theaetetus\, Republic\, Timaeus
and Meno. We will take a few extracts from these dialogues to explore how
he saw the nature of knowledge and how essential it is for him that being
and knowing should be linked.\n\nThese evenings include short talks and/o
r readings from Platonic writings – but we hope they will be genuinely i
nteractive\, with all participants invited to contribute to our collaborat
ive search for truth. No previous experience of formal philosophy is requi
red.\n\nAdmission is free\, but we do encourage those who are able to dona
te £5 in order to cover our costs\, either as cash on the day or donating
through this website\n\nMost of these evenings are self-contained and eve
ry effort is made to make them accessible to the newcomer\, while allowing
the great profundity of the Platonic tradition to step forward and speak
to us at whatever level our present understanding sits. Some of these ses
sions are coupled together\, in order to give us the space to examine more
fully particular texts and themes\, but even here we will ensure that if
those attending have missed the first of the two sessions a recap of what
has gone before will help all participants to pick up the main threads of
the theme.\n\nDownload the discussion paper we will be using: Knowledge a
nd opinion in Plato. \n\nThe Trust has run similar activities for some 18
years\, and in our experience they allow the most profound questions conc
erning human life\, the nature of reality\, and our interactions\, to be e
xplored at once both seriously and with good cheer. Our aim is to provide
a forum for honest and straight-forward enquiry\, but which is unafraid t
o explore inward-moving paths too often neglected by modern schools of tho
ught.\n\nClick on the London tag under Event type to be taken to all upcom
