SUMMARY:The Hero and the Philosopher in Plato’s Apology - an open session
  in Manchester
DESCRIPTION:Plato presents Socrates in his Apology as a philosophical count
 erpart to a Homeric hero – and the mythic nature of this Socrates spills
  over into other Dialogues. What is the alignment of philosopher and hero?
  What are the initiations through which the philosopher-hero is required t
 o pass?\n\nThis event is free but donations are encouraged\, circumstances
  allowing. We’ll start the session at 6.30pm: tea/coffee and cake will b
 e available just beforehand. No need to book. Please come back at the begi
 nning of December to download a PDF of the paper we’ll be using.\n\nThes
 e evenings include short talks and/or readings from Platonic writings – 
 but we hope they will be genuinely interactive\, with all participants inv
 ited to contribute to our collaborative search for truth. No previous exp
 erience of formal philosophy is required. Every effort is made to make the
 se type of evenings accessible to the newcomer\, while allowing the great 
 profundity of the Platonic tradition to step forward and speak to us at wh
