SUMMARY:The Apology-open session in London
DESCRIPTION:On trial for his life\, Socrates endeavours to defend not himse
lf but philosophy itself because he sees what he is doing in Athens as a
 divine task.  He says\, “Now\, therefore\, O Athenians\, it is far from
my intention to defend myself\, (as someone may think\,) but I thus speak
for your sake\, lest in condemning me you should sin against the gift of
Divinity.  For\, if you should put me to death\, you will not easily find
such another (though the comparison is ridiculous) whom Divinity has unit
ed to this city as to a great and generous horse\, but sluggish through hi
s magnitude\, and requiring to be excited by a certain fly.  In like mann
er Divinity appears to have united such a one as I am to the city\, that I
might not cease exciting\, persuading and reproving each of you\, and eve
rywhere sitting among you through the whole day.”\n\nWe will read passag
es from the Apology and explore some of the important elements of them.\n
\nThese evenings include short talks and/or readings from Platonic writing
s – but we hope they will be genuinely interactive\, with all participan
ts invited to contribute to our collaborative search for truth. No previou
s experience of formal philosophy is required.\n\nAdmission is free\, but
we do encourage those who are able to donate £5 in order to cover our cos
ts\, either as cash on the day or donating through this website\n\nMost of
these evenings are self-contained and every effort is made to make them a
ccessible to the newcomer\, while allowing the great profundity of the Pla
tonic tradition to step forward and speak to us at whatever level our pres
ent understanding sits. Some of these sessions are coupled together\, in
order to give us the space to examine more fully particular texts and them
es\, but even here we will ensure that if those attending have missed the
first of the two sessions a recap of what has gone before will help all p
articipants to pick up the main threads of the theme.\n\nWe will being the
follow paper of extracts from the Apology: Apology extracts\n\nThe Trust
has run similar activities for some 18 years\, and in our experience they
allow the most profound questions concerning human life\, the nature of re
ality\, and our interactions\, to be explored at once both seriously and w
ith good cheer. Our aim is to provide a forum for honest and straight-for
ward enquiry\, but which is unafraid to explore inward-moving paths too of
ten neglected by modern schools of thought.\n\nClick on the London tag und
