SUMMARY:The Platonic Tradition on Freewill
DESCRIPTION:Plato’s philosophy can be characterised as a guide to the car
e of the soul – a self-care which is unselfish and generous. All this hi
nges on the soul’s essential nature as self-motive. Although living in a
complex world in which one thing acts and reacts on another\, the inner l
ife of the soul\, according to the Platonic tradition\, gives us a still p
lace to stand above the whirl of worldly events. The cultivation of wisdom
allows the soul to discover its true agency\, even in the midst of that o
uter whirl. We will explore.\n\nThis event is free but if you can please d
onate £5 or more in order to cover our costs\, either as cash on the day
or donating through this website\n\nMost of these evenings are self-contai
ned and every effort is made to make them accessible to the newcomer\, whi
le allowing the great profundity of the Platonic tradition to step forward
and speak to us at whatever level our present understanding sits. Some o
f these sessions are coupled together\, in order to give us the space to e
xamine more fully particular texts and themes\, but even here we will ensu
re that if those attending have missed the first of the two sessions a re
cap of what has gone before will help all participants to pick up the main
threads of the theme.\n\nThe Trust has run similar activities for some 18
years\, and in our experience they allow the most profound questions conc
erning human life\, the nature of reality\, and our interactions\, to be e
xplored at once both seriously and with good cheer. Our aim is to provide
a forum for honest and straight-forward enquiry\, but which is unafraid t
o explore inward-moving paths too often neglected by modern schools of tho
ught.\n\nClick on the London tag under Event type to be taken to all upcom
ing activities in London.\n\nPlease download the paper that we will use fo
r the basis of our exploration of this subject: The Platonic Tradition con
 siders Freewill
