SUMMARY:Women in philosophy- an online open session
DESCRIPTION:Crystal Addey will give a short talk on female philosophers in 
 the Platonic tradition. The existing evidence allows us to glimpse a much 
 wider pattern of female philosophical and intellectual activity within the
  Platonic tradition and that we should be careful not to underestimate or 
 minimise the significance of ancient women within the history of Platonism
 .\n\nThere will then be time for questions and a discussion.\n\nThe time g
 iven is in BST timezone.\n\nThese open sessions usually run twice to accom
 modate different time zones-this is the UK-timed session. We take particul
 ar topics or passages from Plato and other writers in the tradition - thes
 e are open to anyone interested\, and they attract a wide range of partici
 pants. We usually begin with a short 5 or 10 minute introduction to the su
 bject in hand and (when appropriate) a reading of a short text: this leave
 s a good hour or so to discuss the ideas which arise (this will be posted 
 here and emailed to those who have registered).\n\nThere are no fees payab
 le. The Trust sees the Platonic tradition as a spiritual one: not only a g
 uide for the outer life\, but especially to be treasured for its assistanc
 e in the cultivation of the inner self - the soul - for\, says Plato in th
 e Timeaus\, “we are not terrestrial plants\, but blossoms of heaven.”
  We understand the tradition to be profound and cohesive\, and one that r
 epays the long-term effort required to truly embed oneself in it. Our app
 roach is not exclusive - we value other traditions for their insights - no
 r is it dogmatic or an attempt to proselytise: however we are serious in o
 ur attempts to fathom the depths of the tradition\, to identify its founda
 tions\, and where its teachings seem to run counter to accepted thinking t
 o investigate them thoroughly rather than rejecting them prematurely. Thus
  our point of focus is on the teachings of the tradition and most especial
 ly our own inner response to them.\n\nBy joining our studies you are makin

 those truths which have inspired a company of men and women most luminous 
 in their understanding\, and unsparingly generous in their teaching.\n\nYo
