Our philosophical experiences and studies are to be understood in the framework of metaphysics and theology – areas of ethics and virtue, epistemology and dialectics, psychology and cosmology, as well as initiation and worship, are all pulled together as a whole only insofar as they embraced by this single framework.  For the Platonic tradition metaphysics is also theology because the Gods are understood to be the causes of all things, profoundly united as they are to the One or the Good, the “cause of all beautiful things” as Plato’s second letter puts it, and yet they provide the initial starting point for the differences which ultimately manifests as a divine pleroma – the all.

This module will be our best attempt at exploring a coherent framework, giving ourselves the time and space to explore the nature of unity and being, and the relationships between the eternal and the temporal. We will draw on some basic Platonic dialogues, together with the writings of the late Platonist who did so much to tease out the implications of those dialogues.

This is a 7 week course, taking place on Sundays at 6pm (UK time), starting in September 2024. We use zoom and share thoughts in between sessions on Slack. Full dates are: 22nd September, 6th and 20th October, 3rd and 17th November, and 1st and 15th December 2024.
