Our advanced module will centre on Proclus’ short but important essay Ten Doubts concerning Providence, but will draw on two other essays – On Providence, Fate and that which is in our Power and On Evil along with other late Platonic writings.
The module addresses the integration of some fundamental doctrines of Platonism – those of the Gods as the primary sources of providence; of the all-pervasive nature of divine order, justice and goodness; of the relation between the orders of eternity and time; the soul as self-motive exerciser of virtue; of the singularity of the cosmos.
Our sessions should give us an opportunity to consider the nature of evil and the problems it poses for philosophies which contend that the universe is good since it is caused by the Good. From a more personal point of view, we hope that it will throw light on the question of how we should respond to the trials of life and the apparent obstacles to our attempts to live well.
